Apache-2.0 reasoning with a thinking switch — 512K context, 57.0 on SWE-bench Verified.
IBM released the Granite 4.2 family on 25 August 2026 under a genuine Apache 2.0 licence — 3B, 8B and 30B dense decoder-only models trained on roughly 15 trillion tokens with a five-phase strategy that extends the context window to 512K. The distinguishing feature is a thinking switch: one checkpoint can either reason step by step or answer directly, so a team does not have to deploy and pay for two models. The 30B posts 57.0 on SWE-bench Verified, and the 8B and 30B add agentic reinforcement learning trained inside sandboxed terminal and coding environments. Native tool calling is supported, emitting OpenAI-format function calls when served through an OpenAI-compatible endpoint such as vLLM.
