From 1 November 2026 Pakistani banks and DFIs take SME financing applications only through the State Bank's new portal, which shows applicants their status and rejection reasons and gives the regulator a live view of every lender.

SBP makes SMEConnect the only route for SME loan applications

29 October 2026: The State Bank of Pakistan has launched SMEConnect, a central online portal through which small and medium enterprises apply for financing, and from 1 November 2026 every bank and development finance institution must take SME financing applications through it alone. Applicants who walk into a branch or try a bank's own website will be sent to the portal instead.

What the portal does

The central bank's release of 29 October describes SMEConnect as a "single digital platform for SMEs to apply for financing from banks/DFIs". An applicant files once and can then follow the application in real time and, if it is turned down, see the reasons for the rejection. That last point is new for most Pakistani SME borrowers, who have often had no written explanation when a branch declined them.

The State Bank gets a live dashboard showing how many applications each lender has received, processed, approved, disbursed and rejected, both bank by bank and across the industry. In practice that turns every lender's SME funnel into data the regulator can watch daily, rather than figures reported after the quarter.

What changes for banks and DFIs on 1 November

The release says that "from 1st November 2026 onwards, all SME financing applications shall be received exclusively through SMEConnect." Banks and DFIs have been told to display the SMEConnect link prominently on their websites, and to make sure their SME teams and field staff understand the portal and help applicants use it. A tutorial video is on the portal.

The release does not say how applications move from the portal into each lender's own loan origination and credit systems, whether by an interface, a file exchange or re-keying, and names no circular setting out technical requirements. Lenders that run their own online SME application journeys will need to redirect them by the weekend, and their loan origination software vendors will need to know how SMEConnect hands applications over. The status and rejection reasons an applicant sees also have to come from somewhere, which suggests lenders will be updating the portal as each file moves.

Why the State Bank wants the visibility

SME lending has been a long-standing policy target in Pakistan, and the State Bank presents SMEConnect as part of its push for financial inclusion and entrepreneurship. A single entry point lets it compare lenders on approval rates and turnaround on the same basis, and see where applications stall. For an SME, the change means one application form and a record of what happened to it.
