OneDrive for iPhone and iPad will stop supporting iOS 18 and iPadOS 18
7 October 2026: Microsoft has told users of the OneDrive app for Apple devices that it is planning to drop support for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 "soon". The notice sits at the top of the What's New section of the app's App Store listing, with no date attached.
Not yet independently verified. Microsoft gives no date for the change, only the word soon, and the device list comes from heise rather than from Microsoft. What happens to data access on unsupported builds is not stated. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.
The wording asks people to be on iOS or iPadOS 26 or 27 to keep reaching the latest version of the app. Apple shipped iOS 27 in September, according to heise online, which reported the notice in German on 7 October.
The practical effect lands on hardware that Apple no longer lets run iOS 26. heise lists the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR, all released in autumn 2018, and the seventh-generation iPad from 2019, which lost iPadOS 26 support when that release arrived. Anyone with one of those devices will be left on the last OneDrive build that installs on iOS 18, with no new features or fixes.
The same pattern has played out before. Earlier entries in the version history carry an identical warning for iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, and a few builds later the listing marks 18.0.2 as the last release that installs on iOS 17. The iOS 18 notice follows that template, so the cut-off is likely to arrive as a final build flagged in the release notes rather than as a message to administrators.
Microsoft has not said whether files stay reachable from an unsupported app, or whether the sync service will at some point refuse old clients. Nor has it said whether managed deployments are treated differently from personal accounts.
For organisations that issue iPhones and iPads with OneDrive as the file store, the open item is the device inventory. Any handset or tablet that still reports iOS 18 and cannot take iOS 26 will need replacing, or moving to another way of reaching files such as the browser. Devices that can update just need the update.
Google Drive still runs on iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, heise notes, so the cut-off is Microsoft's own choice rather than an industry-wide move.
