ChromeOS updates stop in mid-2034: fleets move to Googlebook OS under a new management licence

23 September 2026 — Google has told Chrome Enterprise and Education administrators how its new Googlebook operating system affects existing ChromeOS fleets. Its help page, last updated on 23 September 2026, says ChromeOS devices will keep receiving "regular updates and security patches through mid-2034". The Register reported on 29 September that this falls about two years short of the ten years of updates Google had promised for recent Chromebooks.

What Google has said

• Current Chromebooks continue to get updates through their supported lifetime under Google's Auto Update policy, but ChromeOS itself is supported only through mid-2034.
• Googlebook OS is built on Android's technology stack and runs Android apps natively. Google says "many newer commercial Chromebook models" will be able to upgrade to it; which models, and when, will be announced later.
• Management is the gap. Googlebooks launching in 2026 are consumer devices with no domain enrolment. Google says "the first wave of core management capabilities will start rolling out in the second half of 2027", through the Google Admin console and third-party mobile-device-management products.
• Licences. Existing Chrome Enterprise Upgrade and Chrome Education Upgrade licences stay active for managing Chromebooks. Googlebooks, and devices moved to Googlebook OS, will come under "a new licensing structure"; Google has not published its terms or prices.

Who is affected

Schools, businesses and public bodies that buy managed Chromebooks, and resellers that quote multi-year device plans. A device bought now with a stated ten-year update life will reach mid-2034 before that life ends, and will then either move to Googlebook OS, if eligible, or stop receiving updates.

What to do

• Recalculate the replacement dates in your device plans against mid-2034, not the Auto Update date printed for each model, where the second is later.
• Before a large Chromebook purchase, ask the reseller or Google which models will be eligible for Googlebook OS, and get the answer in writing.
• Do not buy Googlebooks for managed fleets until domain enrolment exists; Google puts that in the second half of 2027.
• Budget for a possible licence change: existing upgrade licences cover ChromeOS, but Google has said managing Googlebook OS will be licensed differently.
• Keep an eye on Google's help page, which it says will carry the eligibility and licensing details.
