WeatherNext 3
DeepMind's global weather model — hourly forecasts at 5 km, live satellite ingest, up to 50% better precipitation a day out.
About this launch
WeatherNext 3, introduced by Google DeepMind and Google Research on 3 September 2026, is an AI global weather-forecasting model that ingests live geostationary satellite data to update hourly and produces forecasts at resolutions as fine as 5 km — roughly five times sharper than WeatherNext 2's 25 km, six-hourly grid. Google reports up to 50% more accurate precipitation forecasts a day or more ahead and a 60% improvement on rain evaluations over WeatherNext 2, and says the model trains directly on sparse station observations to capture local topography. It feeds Google Search, Maps and Gemini and is available to researchers and customers on Google Cloud. Not a language model; recorded on the board because it is a major, primary-sourced model release in the window, with no LLM benchmarks attached.
