About this launch

AstaBrief 8B is a small open model from Ai2, the Allen Institute for AI, released on 2 October 2026. It takes a research question together with excerpts retrieved from the scientific literature and writes a cited report in one pass, rather than section by section. Ai2 built it for Asta, its agentic platform for scientific work, where it now powers the Fast mode of the report-generation feature alongside a slower mode that uses a proprietary model; Ai2 reports that Fast mode takes about 51 seconds per report against about 179 seconds, its own measurement. Ai2 says training used tens of thousands of real research queries, filtering focused on citations, and preference data, and it has published both the weights and the training data so that others can reproduce the work. The Hugging Face repository lists the Apache 2.0 licence. For research and knowledge-management teams it is a model that can be run on their own hardware for literature summaries, though, as with any such tool, every citation should still be checked against the source.

Not yet independently verified: Every detail here comes from Ai2’s own announcement and its Hugging Face repository; no independent report was found. The speed comparison is Ai2’s own measurement. We will update this when it can be confirmed, and remove this note.
