he Portuguese captain Ferdinand Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães) is one of the greatest explorers of all time. On his travels across the oceans, he set new standards in shipping with determination, experience, and courage.

In October 1520, Magellan passed the "Magellan Strait", the hitherto unknown and later named after him sea route between the South American mainland and Tierra del Fuego. After the 5 km long, dangerous passage, he and his team saw an unknown ocean, which they crossed in three and a half months.

The favorable weather and the calm sea-inspired Magellan to the name "Mare Pacifico" (The peaceful sea - calm ocean). In March 1521, Magellan and his small fleet discovered an archipelago that they named "Philippines" in honor of King Phillips II.
