We started as a pure consulting company for analytical questions in 2009. Our customers were large companies that commissioned us to make forecasts for a specific application, mostly in sales or marketing. Resources played (almost) no role. We, experts, were usually booked for several weeks or months. The (very solvent) companies provided us with a desk, statistical software, some of which ran on specially purchased hardware, and time, i.e. patience. We "scrubbed data" again and again, created predictive models and thus delivered forecasts. In the end, there was a nice final presentation.
