BMW shows 460 kW charging for the iX5, but the US chargers are not on sale
The first electric X5 adds up to 217 miles (WLTP) in ten minutes on an Alpitronic demonstrator at an IONNA site; Alpitronic says the 460 kW…
IONNA is a North American fast-charging network started by eight carmakers, with sites called Rechargeries offering up to 400 kW, no app or subscription needed, and more than 180 live locations.
IONNA LLC runs a public network of high-power charging sites for electric vehicles in North America. It was founded by eight carmakers working together: BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis and Toyota. The company marked its second anniversary in March 2026. It calls its charging sites Rechargeries.
Each Rechargery offers direct current fast charging of up to 400 kW, with both NACS and CCS connectors, and the site says Tesla vehicles can also charge there. Drivers do not need an app or a subscription, and Plug and Charge is supported on compatible vehicles. Most sites have restrooms and food or drink, and some have lounges and pet areas. Instead of building its own app, IONNA works through partner apps; its September 2026 update lists 19 of them, with Presto, ChargeHub and EV Connect added most recently. Automaker discount schemes have started with General Motors, BMW, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz, with the other founders to follow.
The network is for drivers of any electric vehicle, with the founding carmakers offering their own customers lower prices. Host sites and landowners can apply to host a Rechargery through the website. In April 2026 IONNA agreed a partnership with the convenience store chain Circle K, under which it takes over operation of Circle K's existing US chargers, upgrades about 85 of them, and builds toward more than 350 sites; more than 40 Circle K locations were online by September. Utilities across the country have energised sites, and the company named PG&E, PSE&G and NV Energy among them.
The September 2026 announcement says the network passed 180 live sites, more than twice its size at the start of the year, and reports a top ranking among DC fast chargers in the J.D. Power 2026 US Electric Vehicle Experience public charging study. In March 2026 it counted nearly 1,000 bays live. It states a goal of 30,000 high-power bays by 2030. Seth Cutler is chief executive, Aaron Wolff is chief operating officer and Derek Rush is chief financial officer. The leadership page also lists a board made up of representatives of the founding carmakers.
