Accounting spans bookkeeping, statutory accounts, payroll, management reporting and advisory work. Firms under this heading may do all of it or a narrow slice, and may serve businesses of very different sizes with very different needs.

The most useful question is what the working relationship looks like month to month rather than at year end. Who does the bookkeeping, and on which system? Do you get management figures during the year or only statutory accounts after it? Is there a named person who knows your business, or a queue? For a growing business the difference between an accountant who files and one who tells you something in March is the difference that matters.
