Moondream

Moondream is a vision AI system made by M87 Labs, Inc. Its site says it is built in the USA but names no city or founding date. A banner on the home page says Moondream is joining Prime Intellect, which announced the acquisition on 13 October 2026. Moondream Cloud is due to shut on 13 November 2026.

What it does

Moondream lets developers build, fine-tune and deploy models that understand images. Its products are Open Models, which are free for commercial use, Lens, a fine-tuning platform, Photon, an inference engine, and Moondream Cloud, a hosted API compatible with OpenAI's. The site lists cloud pricing of 0.06 US dollars per 1,000 images, and a playground that needs no credit card and adds 5 dollars of credit each month. Enterprise plans include round-the-clock on-call support.

Who it serves

The site does not name a target market. Its examples come from warehouses, manufacturing and logistics, and it says Moondream is trusted by CalPoly. Developers who rely on the hosted cloud API will need to plan for the November closure.

Key facts

Moondream first appeared in 2024 with a $4.5 million pre-seed round from Felicis, Microsoft's M12 GitHub Fund and Ascend. GeekWire, citing The Information, reported fewer than 10 employees. Co-founders Vik Korrapati and Jay Allen join Prime Intellect. Moondream Cloud and Lens close on 13 November 2026, 30 days after the announcement, and unspent purchased credits will be refunded. The model weights stay open, so self-hosting remains possible, and customers will be contacted directly and helped to move to Prime for inference or fine-tuning. The company says Moondream 3.1 handles 34 requests per second and Photon exceeds 60 inferences per second on one H100.
